Life as an HHStudent—from a student’s perspective
Our German student Thomas has just started his journey in Hong Kong! Below, let us take a look at what he has to say about his new life in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong - a melting pot of western and eastern culture
Having been welcomed by my host mum, I could enjoy my first sight of Hong Kong on the top of a double-decker bus during my ride to my new home for the next couple of month.
Still overwhelmed by the sheer multitude of skyscrapers which create Hong Kong’s most famous face, I made myself comfortable in my new home. After picking up my “didi” from school, I quickly found out that we shared a lot of interests, especially with a view to sports. Letting the day end with a nice dinner, it was all in all a pretty good first day in Hong Kong.
I really enjoyed - and I still do - my life in Hong Kong then. After bringing my “little brother” to school in the morning, I got plenty of time to make use of many great things the city offers. I was finally able to go for a run again - on top of that along the coast -, shoot some hoops or just relax in the sunshine. What is more, the playgrounds you can find almost everywhere are an awesome place for everyone who loves working out.
From the moment I pick up my “didi” from school in the afternoon until he goes to bed, we are working on his english, be it while speaking with each other, doing homework together or playing soccer, badminton or basketball.
All the impressions combined, but especially my trips to Hong Kong Central as well as to the countryside of the island, where far away from all the skyscrapers and rush I could experience Hong Kong’s other, from my point of view its probably even more beautiful side, made it possible for me to see how western culture - in all its modernity - and the eastern culture - with all its tradition - melts together into one fascinating city.
Walking through Hong Kong Central I discovered an old temple complex in the midst of all this highly developed infrastructure, which was placed right in front of a wall of skyscrapers - probably one of the most representative sights demonstrating how close those two cultures exist next to each other.
An experience that is really worth trying out!!!
